Making Girls Sports Great Again!
By Eileen Griffin-Ray
President Donald Trump (R) signed an Executive Order banning transgender athletes from competing in womenโs sports, ABC reports. The order is titled, โKeeping Men Out of Womenโs Sportsโ and fulfills a campaign promise made by Trump.
Women and girls will be allowed to have their own bathrooms, locker rooms, and single gender spaces once again. Biological males will no longer be able to compete against biological females in school athletic programs.
โUnder the Trump administration, we will defend the proud tradition of female athletes, and we will not allow men to beat up, injure and cheat our women and our girls," Trump said at the signing ceremony surrounded by women and girls, both athletes and coaches.
An Executive Order issued by former President Joe Biden (D) at the beginning of his presidency mandated that biological males who claim to be female should be treated the same as females, Heartland Daily News reported at the time. The order allowed access to the playing field as well as locker rooms and bathrooms.
Female athletes and coaches interviewed by Heartland Daily News expressed concern, anger, and frustration at Bidenโs directive. They feared for the safety of the girls and mourned for the lost opportunities to compete and win.
Many women athletes remembered when there were no opportunities to participate in sports. Even after Title IV was signed in 1972, it took several years before teams formed and girls found their way to the playing field.
It took several years and many moms leading the way in the 1970s and 1980s to make girls sports a priority for schools and communities. After finally creating their own space in the world of sports, the Biden order crushed the dreams of talented female athletes who knew they would be unable to compete against biological males.
โAnyone not blinded by the cultural Klieg lights can see how athletes born male are beating athletes born female when allowed to compete against them,โ Cal Thomas wrote for Fox at the time. โThis is political correctness at its worst and can deny women athletes scholarships, recognition, and commercial endorsements.โ
Several states fought Bidenโs Executive Order. Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita sued the Biden administration over the order.
โWe cannot effectively protect womenโs rights โ or even their physical safety โ if we refuse to acknowledge there are in fact two sexes, male and femaleโand ONLY two sexes,โ Rokita said in a press release. โWe cannot function effectively as a republic if we deny the basic facts of creation.โ
Trump has returned girls sports to girl athletes. Girls will be safer if they no longer are forced to play sports with their typically bigger, faster, and stronger biological male counterparts.
โFinally, common sense has walked back in the building,โ says Micah Valentine, Kennewick School Board Vice President and father of four girls. โI am thankful that President Trump has the guts to do what everyone knows, deep in their core, is right.โ
Valentine says while he welcomes this news on the national front, he would like to see the state of Washington take the same common-sense approach.
โReykdal and others in state leadership roles are busy fighting to keep criminals on the street and boys playing on the same field as girls.โ
Trump has made girls sports great again. Washington state has not yet received the memo.
Local News Briefs
Tri-Cities WA: Demonstrations billed as an opportunity to show support for immigrants were held in Tri-Cities the first weekend of February, KEPR reports. Protesters gathered on George Washington Way in Richland on Saturday and on Road 68 in Pasco on Sunday.
These events were organized in response to the arrests of illegal immigrants by federal agents. An unprecedented number of illegal immigrants entered the country the last four years during the Bidenโs administrationโs open border policy. The Trump administration is following federal immigration law and deporting those here illegally, prioritizing individuals who have committed crimes.
Video of the event posted by NBC shows several protesters waving the Mexican flag and driving vehicles with large displays of the Mexican flag. This observation prompting many people on social media to question why anyone protesting deportation back to Mexico would wave the flag of Mexico. A better argument to stay in the United States might be to demonstrate loyalty and commitment to the United States.
Tri Cities WA: Benton PUD has announced a rate increase proposal of 5 percent, Tri Cities Journal of Business reports. Electricity rates will go up in the spring if the proposal is approved. The increase is due to the increased cost of power along with higher labor costs and materials.
Benton County PUD Commissioner, Mike Massey, says he will vote in favor of the proposal.
โHaving a 5 percent increase is a blessing given no increases since 2019,โ Massy said. โThe 5 percent increase will shore up expected increases in costs associated with power purchases from the BPA and replacement equipment purchases.โ
Olympia WA: The House State Government and Tribal Relations Committee is proposing making Islamic holidays state holidays in Washington, KIMA reports. Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are both religious holidays celebrated by Muslims. HB 1434 moved forward out of committee with a 5 to 2 vote.
Washington state recently added Juneteenth as a state holiday. Columbus Day is no longer a state recognized holiday, but Native American Heritage Day is the day after Thanksgiving, November 28th.

The Battle Over Parental Rights Continues
By Eileen Griffin-Ray
On February 5th, Senate Bill 5181 passed the Washington state Senate. This bill makes changes to the recently passed Initiative 2081 regarding the rights of parents, Fox reports.
SB 5181, states that it is, โAmending the parentsโ rights initiative to bring it into alignment with existing law.โ Democrats said it was necessary to pass this new law to make sure the recently passed initiative did not conflict with existing statutes. SB 5181 passed with all Democrats in favor and all Republicans against.
Letโs Go Washington launched Initiative 2081, known as the Parents Bill of Rights, after many parents across the state expressed concern about things happening in the public schools. Parents want transparency and they want to know what their children are being taught. The parentsโ bill of rights gave the authority over children back to their parents and offered a path for parents to have gain transparency into their childโs classroom experience.
Across the country parents have expressed concern about the use of critical race theory (CRT) in the classroom, the teaching of a radical sexual agenda, and the availability of sexually explicit books in school libraries, as Heartland Daily News, a publication of The Heartland Institute has reported extensively.
Under I 2081, parents in Washington have the right to review curricula, books, and instructional materials. It allows an opt-out for parents who want to remove their child from a sexual lesson or any activity where a child is questioned about his or her sexuality, or the familyโs religious or moral beliefs or political affiliation.
Further, I 2081 requires schools to notify parents before any medical service is provided to their children, except in case of emergency. Parents are to be given access to health records including any mental health counseling.
Parents have the right, under I 2018, to be informed immediately if their child is the victim or the perpetrator of a criminal act. Parents are to be notified immediately if their child is taken off-campus without their pre-approval.
